| "Periwinkles is the name of the historical house being
renovated across from the riverfront that "Periwinkle Environmental
Boat Rentals" is operated from. The name was given by J.J. Pitchford and
his wife Kate, who raised 6 sons in the homestead. The Pitchford's were
one of the earliest families to settle and develop the Jensen Beach
area. see. (Sandra Thurlow's - Historic Jensen and Eden on Florida's
Indian River - Pg.85.) The date Periwinkles was built is undocumented, although there are pictures of the family on the front porch dated 1908. Periwinkles was moved from it's original location at Church Street & Indian River Drive in April 2006. The two story vernacular frame house is of a classic Florida Cracker House. Vernacular structures built by early settlers were primarily wood framed with above grade floor levels, extensive covered porches, tin shingle roofs and numerous tall window openings for cross ventilation. In 2009 the home was listed on the Florida master site file, and the Martin County Historic Register." |
